Geantraì - Sean Potts

Post by PJ »

There's a nice edition of Geantraì featuring Sean Potts on TG4:

Click on Ceol Cartlann on the left menu and scroll down to Geantraì - 28/11/2006

Anyone know who the second piper is?

The second piper is Ned Wall from Co. Wexford (I think).
Careful men, he wets his plants . . .

What slow aire is it that the piper and whistler are playing? Very nice.

Caoineadh a phiobaire (the piper's lament) which Sean Potts senior wrote for John Potts. It's followed by Strike the Gay Harp.

Sorry for if the spelling is wrong and if I got Sean's explanation wrong. My Irish is very rusty.

It should be in your inbox now. Have fun, it is one of my favorite tunes.

Here's a clip of my doing a messy job of butchering it...

At the same link, go to TG10 is Fearr: Ceol and about 21 minutes in there's a brief clip of Paddy Keenan playing the Kesh jig with Matt Molloy.

Also, Geantraì on 19/12/2006 is presented by and features Robbie Hannon

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Here's an interesting recipe for this tune.

Tommykleen's Key-sublime Pie

-Try playing the tune on a C chanter over D drones.

-Shift the tune up so that the starting note is Bb (well, B note on a D chanter).

-Some of the D regs will work on this. Experiment!

-Garnish with a twist of lemon

-Serves 4.

Yeah he's from a place called Ballycullane about 10 miles from where this programme was shot, in harmonica player John Murphy's pub (called Colfers) in Carrig-On-Bannow. Ned was taught by Tommy Kearney in Waterford. He plays a nice set of reels with his brother Dermot and their brother-in-law Rory Healy. There's a great festival held in Carrig each July. http://www.philmurphyweekend.com/

Ceol na bhFánaithe - 20/09/2006

There's a great clip with Paddy Keenan playing his old Rowsome chanter with something resembling a UFO on the top of it!!

What am I doing wrong? I can't get back any farther than Nov 2006 in the archives. Can anybody tell me how to get to the show with Paddy Keenan?

Thanks in advance, David
