OT: Software to Record Sound files on Windows

Post by chortle »

I want to record myself using my computer mic, but the program that comes with Windows only records for 60 seconds. Is there any freeware out there for recording longer sound files? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

http://audacity.sourceforge.net

I use Audacity, though some have problems with it--it is available in the various platforms. It is freeware, and by also installing Lame (there is a link to download it, at the Bersirc site), you can save the files as MP3.

Many people like Goldwave, but it's not freeware.

For some reason, you can only record a short clip with Windows Recorder, but by recording and recording again, you can extend the length.

Hi,
The best free windows audio software around use to be Cool Edit.
Unfortunately it has been bought by Adobe and they now charge
US$299.00 for it. :(

However softpedia has not yet removed the "Cooledit pro" download link at Metropolitan, it's still working :)

Unfortunately, it is an eval license only, which expires after 21 days unless you purchase a valid license...

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

I can't even get the Cooledit to download. Glad I did not spend too much time on it!

Thanks to all for these great suggestions. I tried Audacity and it works like a charm. I appreciate all the help. I'm now up and recording!

Just tried Audacity for giggles - hated the interface. Goldwave just released it's latest version (5.06) recently and it flys through all sorts of recording and editing tricks with ease. It just seems much more intuative to me and less like something AOL designed.
