Sounds terrible, if that's the best they could say about it.

Well, the guy may not know all the "correct" terms for whistle parts, but judging from his bio, there's no reason to think he couldn't make a good sounding whistle. People I've known with that old school Navy machine shop experience could make anything out of anything, and were often called upon to do so. That clip on "thumb ring" he includes with the low D is brilliant, I want one.

I really don't know what made me do it, God knows I don't need another whistle. I just did the buy it now on Ebay for his Low G. I hope it is everything his description says.

I wrote to Whistlesmith and asked what the "sound straw is. Here's his answer.

"The sound straw is a small pipe which has been machined to a specific angle. The straw holds the removable mouthpiece and determines the distance from the fipple plug and the ramp to vary pitch. Each of the whistle has a different straw to make the best tone back pressure in the tone body. In the near future I will be making a complete set of straws for the whistles that can be inserted to change the sound and chiff of each model. Straws and mouthpieces can be easily replaced if lost or damaged directly from stock inventory. "

I still don't understand.

But I'm really tempted to buy the low G.

It looks like the straw is an inside piece of tubing that can be moved up or down. The straw is the ramp. Move is farther or closer to the fipple plug. Maybe? Seems like I remember someone haveing a similar type of design. Crap I havn't gotten a new whistle in a while anyway.......

Sounds a lot like when pipers "rush" their chanters. I guess it's logical that it would work in a whistle. Will this be another option for whistle tweaking?

By the time the child reaches 18, the whistle will have grown into a low D! Guess that mint in the box is for a nice fresh aroma...
