Little status on our CD project, as previously mentioned. Our Dulcimer player is also the resident artistic guru-guy, working the art and the liner guts for our new CD. He's come up with a new idea, after struggling for several months with the old concept to no avail.

Shorter rather than longer, the CD is taking more time to complete, but we're still working toward the end product.

Thanks, everyone, for keeping us in your thoughts and such

Bree,
I am so sorry for your loss. I am sorry it took me so long to learn of your father's death. My deepest condolences to your family and extended family. He loved your mother most of all.

You're not alone guys... I occasionally stop and realize that the "King of the Gypsies" is somewhere else now, and it really saddens my heart. I wish I could be as transparent as he was....

I was just informed of Glenn's passing. I have a great many fond memories of listening to "Gypsy" playing guitar with Loring, Andy, Cohen, Richard Ruskin, Steve Ross, on and on. These were some of the best times of my young life growing up in Detroit. Iwas kind of their" Little Buddy". I was a little younger but I worked at Zukin's "Dial A Dinner", a carry out and delivery resturant. So I often brought food to the "starving musicians" who were my friends. I'm glad so many of you are celebrating his life like this.

It seems almost like sacrilege to ask this but, is there anyone out there that has written down the notes for this? I would consider it a great privilege if I could have the music for this so I could play it.

Uncle Glenn

Post by DaleII »

I was but 17 when I first met Glenn as an adult. He was my father's brother. I can't express the love I felt as he tried to help and guide me. He truely stood in for his younger brother who had passed. I've spent so many nights around that little table in Glenn & Vicki's house, listening to him play and wax philosophical. I still miss Glenn and so want to talk to him again.

Not sacrilege at all: if I know Glenn, he'd want his stuff out in the world with as many people as possible enjoying it.

Hi DaleII,

I am sorry for your loss as well. Uncles can make a lot of difference in how we look at the world, I know.

You can still talk to him. It's just a bit harder to hear him talk back. :)

As requested and suggested, here is my basic ABC transcription of Glenn Schultz's hymn, Home Before the Dark, from the mp3 link, with chords and lyrics. It should be easily playable on a D whistle or any melody instrument, by itself or along with the recording.

For a nice printed sheet music copy, you can use the online Convert-A-Matic at concertina.net:
http://www.concertina.net/tunes_convert.html

Cut and paste the ABC (from X:1 to the end) into the big text box, and click Submit. When the rendered page appears, click on the "PDF Sheet Music" link at the top to create a nice PDF file that you can view, print, and/or download.

I had to make a few compromises for the converter, such as the layout, the 4/4 time signature instead of free meter, and not transcribing the slightly different melody the second time through. But I hope it's pretty close. And I'm not 100% sure about "Father Fahn" ... maybe someone who was close to Glenn can help. Any corrections are welcome.

I never met Glenn, but hope this transcription brings a smile to those who knew and cared about him.

MTGuru,

Thanks for the ABC's. Good stuff!

My old ears may not be very accurate but I transcribed the "Father Fahn" as "Father fond", not that it matters much.

I am still searching for a source for the song. Like others I have searched the 'net with no good results. I have assumed this is a spiritual, perhaps 19th or early 20th century. My wife collects old hymnals, not an extensive collection though, and "Home Before Dark" is nowhere to be seen. We're still looking. Could it be Glenn's own work?

At any rate, that recording will continue to haunt me (in a good way).

Hi All -

Bree here.

Wandered across this thread on a chance; surprised and thrilled we're not the only ones with Da still on our minds, even after all this time. Coming up on the 2 year mark, and we're still surviving despite our best efforts : )

(Tell all your friends... there are still a few whistles available, mostly in odd keys.)

The GrandBaby, Rowan, is 9 months this week, and from what I understand, Da spends much of his time with her. She grins at his picture the widest of all those on the wall. No surprise, really. Crazy bugger.

Love from Oxford
