Brigg fair

Post by falkbeer »

I´ve been looking for the sheet music for the old english folk tune Brigg fair for some time now. I´ve only heard it in the Percy Grainger and Fredric Delius arrangements. It would be nice to see the "original" tune in it´s purest form. Please drop me a line if you know where I can find it. (I think it would sound exellent on the whistle!)

Here below is my transcription of Joseph Taylor singing a verse of Brigg Fair. This wax cylinder recording was made in 1905 by Percy Grainger himself, and was the direct source of his own composition. So it is close indeed to the purest form. :-)

If your ABC software can't handle lyrics, just delete the w: lines.

There's a nice description of the recording and singer here:

If you would like a copy of the recording, PM me with your e-mail address and I can send you the mp3. It's very short (only 40 seconds long). Cheers!

I am eight miles from Brigg.

More Pubs per mile than any town in Lincolnshire.

I go there a few times a year and I would bet good money that not one dweller of that town as ever heard of the song.

Sad, but true..

And many a poor man that has roved,
Loved and thought himself beloved,
From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes.

I live about 17 miles from Brigg and until last month I attended school there for 7yrs - I would agree with what dubhlinn says... almost all of my friends didnt even realise that there was a fiddle fest! and they wouldnt believe me that there was one for until I dragged them to tourist information! :o

PS I would like a copy of the recording if you still have it! Ill PM my address
