Aren't whistles a type of fipple flute? I may be wrong about that. I would think people would, though, look at you equally strangely if you told them you were learning to play the fipple flute. I don't think Irish flute is correct---that really means a flute. Tin whistle, pennywhistle, Irish whistle (I have come across this). I just found whistle flute in a dictionary. No one else seems to call it that though. I would just say pennywhistle---because there are other sorts of whistles, although I'm not sure one has to learn to play them.

Last year, Lark asked this question (less seriously):

http://chiffboard.mati.ca/viewtopic.php?t=17029

I liked his suggestion of changing the name to "coolmaphone", but
no one has adopted it yet.

Perhaps it would be best to enlighten people to the joy and beauty of the instrument. Don't worry about them belittling you because of their ignorance. It's your opinion of yourself and your music that matters most.

Call it what it really is and be proud of the history and tradition.

Tell us something.: I play whistles. I sell whistles. This seems just a BIT excessive to the cause. A sentence or two is WAY less than 100 characters.

Tell us something.: I play the first flute Jon Cochran ever made but haven't been very active on the board the last 9-10 years. Life happens I guess...I owned a keyed M&E flute for a while and I kind of miss it.

I wasn't worried about what people would think about my playing a strange instrument called the "tin whistle". However, those who may have had a kazoo image pop into their mind soon changed their ideas when I pulled the whistle out and played for them. Instant cool kid on the block. 8) :P

Yeah, what Mike said!!
If you want to sound exotic, you could call it by it's Irish name, Feadog (acute accent on the o). Note that this is a brand name too.

Well that takes care of the o. But what about the first part. Is it Feadog,
or Feadog?

I've heard it is pronounced "Fad".

Edit: And the second bit sounds like "Rogue". I'm not sure though. The people I say the name to wouldn't know the difference anyways. lol

Noah played "Whiskey 'Fore Breakfast" on the nose flute for the school talent show one year. He told them it was an "ancient Appalachian instrument". :o
