Oak is Feadóg / Feadóg is Oak???

Post by pao »

Hi there, C&F’ers!!! 講和
This is quite long…

I’ve just acquired an Oak C whistle. I’m so surprised that it sounds terrible considering that the Oak D sounds sooo pure. So it led me to this. I was playing my Feadóg D (Mark III) and I suddenly noticed the mouthpiece, “looks very similar to the Oak C mouthpiece”… And then, voila, it really looks like the Oak C mouthpiece, so I checked my Feadóg C (nickel also with black mouthpiece) to compare it. What a disappointment!!! The Feadóg C and Oak C are the same – mouthpiece, color, bore size, the fingerholes are also the same in terms of their width and spaces from each other. Even the label sticker of Feadóg and Oak are of the same size – height and width are exact – only the print is different. The Oak C too a little heavy (just a little) because of the triple nickel plating, Feadóg (I guess) is just plated once because the inside of the bore is not totally plated with nickel – brass is showing up! So if you remove the label sticker, and put them in your hands, you’d be looking at two Feadóg C whistles. By the way, they sound the same too – tinny and breathy.

Here is a picture of Oak D and Oak C I found on the Internet. The Oak D has the unique mouthpiece to separate it to the Feadóg Mark III design, but the Oak C on the photo does looks as if its Feadóg C nickel without looking at the label.

In addition to this, the Oak D and Feadóg D bore are also the same. Again the Oak body is a bit heavy because of the triple nickel plating, but looking at how the fingerholes are made and spaced, well, they’re the same too. The good thing about this is that the Oak D mouthpiece is made differently; it’s a bit shiny but kinda resembles the Feadóg Mark III mouthpiece without the ramp on the fipple hole.

I also have the August 2004 release of Feadóg, THE CORRS official tin whistle. The clear gift box (as they call it) are of the same size too. The cardboard inside are of the same material and size too. The pictures and text are different BUT the diagram of the fingering chart are exactly the same, as in the same, even the drawing of the whistle beside the diagram. On the bottom part of the Feadóg’s cardboard the following is printed: Made in Ireland by Feadóg Teo. On the other hand, the Oak’s cardboard doesn’t say anything about it’s manufacturer, the only thing in there is the US price, the publications that printed it and the distributor which is Music Sales Corp. in New York.

Now, can anyone tell me if I’m CORRECT with what I’ve said??? Or WRONG??? But if I’m wrong, how can you explain to me all the exact similarities especially the exact make of Oak C and Feadóg C??? Really sounds nasty. Thanks for bearing with me.

Welcome to the forums! :)

I didn't really like the Oak C, either (especially compared to the D). I've never had a Feadóg C, so I can't say whether I think they're similar or not, sorry.

As a side note, if you're wanting a cheap C whistle, Walton's C is awesome. It comes in nickel and brass and is a lot better than their Mellow D (even though I like the Mellow D, too).

I was also disappointed with the Oak C. I'm not sure if I've got a feadog C or not, but
I'll have to check this out when I get home.

Tell us something.: Of course I'm not a bot; I've been here for years... Apparently that isn't enough to pass muster though!

One of my best Tweaks was a Feadog C.
