Joe Kennedy Narrow Bore D

Post by dow »

Does anyone on here have a narrow bore D chanter by Joe Kennedy? If so, could you record me a clip? Joe doesn't have one recorded. Oh, and if you've got one of his wider bore D chanters as well, a clip for comparison sake would be great. I'd go listen to one myself, but Boerne, TX is a bit far from Ontario. :D

Thanks!

I have a Joe Kennedy NBD left handed chanter made from applewood, with boxwood and brass.

I have a recording of chanter I did a while back and when I find it and do a new recording I will post links later.

All the best

Thanks Greg.

Sorry Ferg, my phone auto-corrected Ferg into Greg. Lesson learned: NEVER answer a forum post with a phone that has autocorrect turned on.

Hello Dow,
I have a Kennedy NBD that i am very happy with. I'll try to get a sound file for you.
One thing to know is that the NBD is not as load as a Concert pitch chanter. You will be washed out in a session. The sound carries very well in a setting such as a church were you may be a solo performer.
I got mine, not for sessions, but for myself to enjoy. It is very expressive.

Thanks Kyle. This is sounding more and more like what I'm looking for. I'm not concerned about being heard in a session, since the only session around close enough to go to happens at a time when I can't make it. Matter of fact, I haven't played with them in about 3 1/2 years for that reason. On top of that, I figure it'll be a couple of years before I'm ready to torture the public anyway. :D

Thanks Ferg. That's a fine looking chanter, and it's good to hear the sound clip, too. I went ahead and ordered one from Joe last month.

Hi Dow

What wood, metal and mounts will the chanter be made from.

What was the time scale Joe has for the chanter being ready. I go my chanter around 3 months after ordering.

When I placed order with Joe he only has ebony or applewood.

So when for applewood brass and bowwood with 4 keys F♮, G#, Bb and C♮

Cheers

Hi Ferg,

It's more of a budget chanter. the mounts are made along with the rest of it, instead of using contrasting wood. It's actually already made, and only wants the bag to be ready to send my way. It's cherry with all key blocks and a c key. I ordered it on Feb. 14, but he said that I caught him at a lull between orders, and he was able to start right in on it. My guess is that after brazenkane posted his thread about Joe taking orders, that I was the first one to place an order. Not sure of that of course, but I got that impression. Anyway, here's a picture of it that Joe sent me.

Hey Gregory,

It's in shipping land. Has left San Antonio, and is scheduled for Sunday Delivery tomorrow. I still have a hard time believing that USPS is doing some Sunday deliveries.

Just thought that I'd update this to say that I got the practice set on March 29th, and have been happily annoying the whole family with it since. The good news is that my wife says that I "don't sound nearly as bad as I thought you would." The bad news is that I have to put our cat Carley out of the house or lock her in the other room when I practice, or she bites me on the ankle repeatedly til I stop playing. :D

Thanks to Joe for a great practice set, and to the rest of you who offered encouragement and advice.

Congratulations and happy piping! Come to the O' Flaherty retreat near Midlothian this coming October; Brian McNamara will be teaching pipes for three days, and he's a super teacher.
