So, is there an inside story here?

Just my opinion but I think as with all kinds of music it's always essential to know the basic techniques and knowledge of the fundamentals of that instrument. If you listen to the likes of John Coltrane at his most avent garde , you can still hear the tradition and accomplishment of hour upon hour of practice and understanding.
You need to know the tradition before you can break with it and still have something valid at the end.
The basics of learning an instrument especially Uilleann Pipes can't be ignored... Well I suppose they can be ... But the final outcome may be not to everyone's taste

According to Passim's calendar, April 3, 2012 was an Open Mic night, FWIW.

This is exactly, and I mean exactly, with the Coltrane reference and everything, what I thought when I heard this.

Well, I listened again and still like it. I may not know didly about the pipes, but I would like to think I've got a pretty good ear for music.

play what you feel Jim damn everyone elses tastes, if its satisfying to you yourself. you get one life to live, & if youve put up something your proud of on an instrument you love, thats a lot more than most have done with their lives.

I released The Seagull/An Faoileag last year, to mixed reviews, but I'll never fall 'out of love' with that piece.

One can spend a whole lifetime being retentive about their playing & wether or not its in the pocket ;
and yet never produce a single heartfelt original note of music from their own selves.

Lastly, Im not hearin any 'Trane.... his "tradition" ??? yer kidding, right? maybe among his imitators

Sure, thats a great sentiment,but if we were to say that its good pipeing we would be lying.
I also think to get up in front of an uninitiated audience and play in that way is a con.
