Titanic in 3D

Post by Jarlath.I »

OK, someone had to bring it up....It might as well be me. :tomato:

So what do you think - Is Titanic good or bad for piping in general?

One other thought (something that's always bothered me) is how can Gaelic Storm claims to be the band from Titanic, but they have no piper in their group. The steerage scene is clearly all about the piper, isn't it? Maybe just my bias, but I know I was disappointed when I went to hear Gaelic Storm and found out there was no piper in the group.

Waterford piper Brian Walsh used to be in the band and, if I remember correctly, was it's founder and driving force. After the movie came out they split up. I think it's good for piping in a very general sort of way in that it informs the general public that they exist. As we all know the VAST majority of humans have no idea what uilleann pipes are. It's our job to help get the word out

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

At a gig the other day I had my first-ever request for "the theme from Titanic". When I failed to deliver that one I was asked for "the theme from Braveheart".

Same as it ever was...

A couple reasons:
It was a cultural phenomenon in 1997, and is, I believe, Sony Music's biggest selling album.
In the early 2000's many claimed that the movie was, at least partly, the reason for starting to play the pipes (Although I have to guess if that was the reason for starting, they probably are not still playing.)

So another wave of pipers coming, do you think? LOL

That might have more to do with Celine Dion than uilleann pipes. :tomato:

I think that the movie was merely one of many elements that contributed to an increase in the popularity of pipes. Riverdance was another. Probably the most important was the Celtic Tiger which allowed the Irish government (and citizens) to invest more in the traditional arts and the cultural identity.

But none of them would have meant much if the strong foundations of piping had not already been laid by several generations of passionate pipers and pipemakers. This is what will sustain piping in the long term.

I think it's really Titanic 4D. The movie has become unstuck in the space-time continuum, and will continue to materialize in the present from time to time, like the Tardis.

First ever? After all this time? Man. You must have been playing for abstemious folk in classier haunts than I.
