A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Thanks, Phil.

I don't think I addressed Chas' question re: organizing a session. *
*Forgive the oblique description re: names. *

Where I live, there are only 2 other traditional Irish musicians, both are simply "not available" to play for one reason, or another. That leaves only myself.

Another factor here is that simply, there's only 2 Irish pubs here that could host trad music, simply won't. It's all about selling drinks (of course), can you bring in an audience, and of course...the now ever prevalent, will you play for free. Because of THAT aspect, I can't get 1 of the 2 musicians, out to play (the other musician simply will not play in pubs here).

The good news is I heard about a sessiun about 2.5hrs north..... :(

interesting. may i be so bold to offer a coupla suggestions?
Why aim for just the pub? & does it have to be a "real" session situation?
Is there an arts center, church, school, civic group, galleries, import shop, funeral home, social club, or a certain "3-letter-long" fraternal organization, that would be interested? Not that im anything special of a player , but Ive piped in all these kinda joints. One never knows what unlikely situatons can turn up. for ex;
Few years back I had a run of Uilleann gigs for the Lutheran Ladies sewing circle. Talk about networks. I ended up hitting every church in their diocese, they really dug it & it paid well. whodve figured that?
& why wait for another ITM player to hop on? Go on & try to corrupt some equally frustrated flamenco guitarist & start a new genre :D
Apologies if youve gone down these roads. Being one of oh, about 8 (?) US Zampognari, and 1 of (maybe? )3 Cornemuseux,
....Im totally sympatico with the frustration part. :pint:

It might help if your town changed its name from "Boobyville".

If you've ever been to Miami, you'd understand that Boobyville is quite the appropriate name! It has many pluses, and some minuses too.

Start a pipers club. It only takes 1 to get the ball rolling.

I assume you're already aware of these folks, but I realize they're all far far to the north of you. There's a piper that lives in Key West also...still a bit of a hike from your location.

Rather than going for a session in a Pub as a start, I'd recommend finding someone who wants to play tunes and just get together at your house for an afternoon. Who knows after a while you might find a second person who's interested and next thing you know you have a session.

We've had similar experiences trying to find a Pub for our session, even the ones representing themselves as "Irish" don't want traditional music. (e.g. "Don't you guys know Whiskey in the Jar?") When we were between pubs, we had our session in my kitchen for several months.

Best of luck.

Thanks for the suggestions. Infrequently, (fiddler) James Kelly will come over, or we'll converge at his place if his brother is in town. It looks like we (himself, and a few others) might try to meet quarterly. :-) That'd be a nice start!
