sammyd,

They are spot on. This set was made for Emmett Gill from Galway, who is a very experienced piper and a lot of care was taken with this set. Emmett had taken order of a K&Q flat set in C, so Emmett asked me if I wanted them. I had a look and was very happy with them.

The chanter at first was a very little bit flat in the second octave. I was given a staple from Fergus Finnegan which was very slightly wider (approx. ¼ mm wider inside bore) and it is now spot on in both octaves. Fergus loved the set and expressed I should hold on to them and finish the set off to a full set.

The drones are very steady and little effort has been needed to have them play in tune with the chanter and themselves. They do look much better than in the photo’s above (poor photograph’s).

practice set in 2002

Post by uiscefomhair »

This is a (very small and not very good) picture of Brian and I at a course in Burwell (www.burwellbash.info) last year (2002)...
I had only had the practice set for about 3 or 4 weeks, and he made a point of asking me to play a set in front of a packed room in a session! Thanks Brian ;-)

my pipes

Post by Guest »

Don`t know if i`ve put this in the right place, but here`s a pic of my pipes.
The chanter bottom is by hughes, chanter top by someone(there name escapes me) from Anglesey, Wales, Drones by A. Ginsburg, and regulators by Dave shaw. He mounted the mainstock as high up in the bag as possible because i had problems reaching the bottom keys.
A bit of a mixture, but i had to build it up as and when i could afford to.
As a little ancedote, i had the chance in 1983 to buy a seconhand set of G. Woof pipes in D for £950 but being a student, could`nt afford them!!

Thanks to the replies i had to my first posting, and especially brendon from Manchester, from whom i got a flight case for my pipes

Tell us something.: I used to play pipes about 20 years ago and suddenly abducted by aliens.

Those bigass keys on Tony's Angus chanter were a special order/request, by the way. Brad usually makes 'em daintier. Tony maybe has ball point pen size fingers?
How's the new stick working, Tony?

Kevin,
Shhhh.... Brad was a bit reluctant to make a Rowsome style Fnat key for me. I'm not supposed to tell anyone so thanks for letting the cat out of the bag. My other chanters are Rowsome style and he made them according to a photo I sent with my order.

Geeze loueeze, Tony...what are you going to do for all the drones you need? B's Bb's C's (I know you have some D's). Decisions, decisions. Do you find the Bb's are easy to play, pressure and all? fingers sore yet from the stretch?

Lorenzo,
You already know I'm recovering from a shoulder injury... but I played this chanter for nearly 2 hours last night and I'm not suffering today :-)
As far as the finger stretch goes... NO PROBLEM. It's got a light touch and good balance through both octaves. My hands would be sore if I played a D chanter that long.

Drones?? I used my kitchen renovation money for pipes, I'll have to wait for drones.

You can always set sustaining electronic monotones to the desired pitch (drone substitute) :) When I got my first practice set, I'd plug a couple keys on the pump organ and pump both instruments...a good all-around workout. More entertaining than a bicycle exerciser. :D

I have a Casio 66 key MIDI keyboard that I tape keys down to play with my C or B chanters (and D when I'm lazy) it actually works to replace drones when nothing else is available.
Pump organ? You may be on to something here.

Lorenzo asked me to post this picture of him with his first practice set. He used the pump organ for drones.

Thanks Tony!

It was the Year of Our Lord 1983, and boy was I serious. Hey, I didn't need a full set, I had tons of reeds in my organ. And the pump organ just sounded a whole lot better than those flimsy sticks everyone was using. Only problem was...I had difficulty getting the organ in my car, but it fit in the truck just fine. :D

(of course when I got real serious, and got a full set, everything began to lighten up, including me)

If you are looking for the drone sound as well as a good workout, you could also try the "Drone Machine" build by Rob Moore.
