New Web Site: Uilleann Pipes Reed Adjustment Compendium

Post by Steve Pribyl »

I'm assembling a site/resource for those of us learning to make reeds. It's basically a searchable database of suggestions for "what if my reed..." scenarios. The suggestions are from well established reed makers and pipemakers who have published such information in print or on the web. All sources are credited. Of the credited sources, T. Britton, D.M. Quinn, D. Hegarty, S. Gallagher and P. Sky have so far given me written approval.

I have not quoted this Uilleann Pipe Forum, but I am considering at least linking to relevant posts here and on the other forum.

I have a few ideas for additional content that are in the works. Please take a look and let me know if anyone has suggestions for making it more useful.

Thanks.
Steve

I especially like that you have sections that focus on drone and regulator reed issues. That information has been hard to come by.

Great stuff. I'd love to see sections on various reed dimensions (drone and regs as well), plus tuning information. There are a couple great techniques out there for tuning chanter, drones and regs and having them in one place would be a lovely resource. Also tuning information for concert and flat pitch sets. I'm always having to hunt around and find this when I'm doing something like setting the offsets for a tuner.

There are reed dimensions in various locations on the web. Quoting text is one thing, but lifting entire web pages would be frowned upon, I suspect :D . I will find a way to better organize the links to it. Yes, great suggestion!

I'm sure I can find the tuning offsets and post a chart.

I recently received a revised edition of My Method by Tim Britton, so I will be updating that information. I will also link to articles, current news of arundo donax, videos (Joseph Sampson's cane harvesting comes to mind), etc.

Steve,
great site. I'm amazed at your organization already, and I know it will only get better. You are doing a service to the community. Great job!

BTW, you have my full permission to use or link to my video(s) (present and future), website, or even comments that I've made in person as far as cane goes.

all the best

Tell us something.: I caught the trad bug listening to Liam O'Flynn. Started on whistle, then moved to pipes. Tricky Basmatis, but I love 'em.

UPReeds.com now has a place to share information about the reeds we make. Registered users can upload a picture and specifications of their reeds, including sound files. Anyone can view them, but you have to be registered to post.
Here's a page showing the details of a reed:

Truly awesome web site!!! Great, elegant design. Easy to navigate. Will be a hugely valuable resource for a long time and it's built to grow. Just brilliant!
