The 'What Does X Play?' Thread

Post by bdh »

Hi all,

There are a bunch of posts asking "what does X play?" or "who made X's set?" scattered throughout the forum, but I'm wondering whether it might be worthwhile starting a more comprehensive listing here.

So, with that in mind, could we put together a list of recorded pipers, along with: the maker(s) of their set(s); the wood(s) and other materials used; the chanter key(s) and bore(s); and any other relevant information (e.g. do they make their own reeds? do the sets have interesting provenance? pillar-mounted or ring keys? etc)?

Of course it's the always more to do with the player than the set, but my personal (and not insubstantial!) wishlist (in no particular order) would be to know more about the sets played by: Paddy Keenan, Liam O'Flynn, Mick O'Brien, John McSherry, Jarlath Henderson, Michael McGoldrick, Eliot Grasso, Cillian Vallely, Davy Spillane, Jerry O'Sullivan, Brendan Ring, Brian McNamara, Ronan Browne, Robbie Hannan, Díarmaid Moynihan, David Power, Todd Denman, Eamonn Dillon, Marco Pollier, Sylvain Barou, Tiarnan O'Duinnchinn, Brendan Wade, Kieran O'Hare, Eoin Dillon, Mick Coyne, Donnchadh Gough, Flaithrí Neff, Sean Gavin, Gay McKeon, Sean McKeon, Barry Kerr, Padraig McGovern, Michael Cooney, Emett Gill, Neil Martin, Martin McCormack, Louise Mulcahy, John O'Brien, Dermot Hyde, Dickie Deegan, Eoin O'Riabhaigh, Jimmy O'Brien-Moran, Joe McKenna, Martin Nolan, Joe McHugh, Loic Blejean, Mikie Smyth, Ciaran O'Dongaile, Neil Mulligan, Ronan Le Bars, Sean Potts, Michael Horgan, Tommy Keane, and Hanz Araki.

Threads tend to get cluttered.

Why not add the information to a wiki?

For example...

@ mukade -- Good idea. Maybe once there's more to add?

@ boyd -- Thanks! Had no idea so many were playing Koehler chanters.

Kieran O'Hare:

Concert pitch D - Kirk Lynch
Flat set in B - Andreas Rogge
Flat set in C - Joe Kennedy

BTW, I believe Elliot Grasso started out playing a concert pitch set by Kirk Lynch. Not sure if they're still his main concert pitch pipes, though.

From http://www.MartinNolan.com:
"Martin plays Andreas Rogge uilleann pipes, Cillian O’Briain low whistles, and Syn whistles"
I recall him saying his drones had brass reeds.

Ronan Browne: (from his website)

1. James Kenna set of union pipes circa 1780
2. Denis Harrington set of grand union pipes circa 1845
3. Ronan Browne concert pitch set of uilleann pipes from 1995

"The Ronan Browne set was made in the mid 1990s with great help from the wonderful flute maker Martin Doyle who gave me full access to his workshop and tools and furthermore manufactured new tools whenever they were needed."

"Although I made a chanter for the set, I never bothered reeding it past the first day as I am spoiled with a lovely Leo Rowsome chanter given to me by Andy Conroy and the chanter I play much of the time, a Peter Hunter from 1985. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have had an ongoing relationship for many years where Peter gave me new chanters whenever he felt he had made something special and I now have chanters from him in D, C#, C, B, Bb and of course the famous blunderbuss G chanter."
