I want to expand...what should i get?

Post by PeteyWhistle »

I have a Seth Gallagher practice set. I am considering expanding the 'set' to include drones. Any recommendations of whom I should go to? Although I'm quite happy with the SG chanter, bag and bellows, I would like to try another maker for the drones. Also, do i need a new bag, or can the maker modify my existing bag? Please let me know your recommendations.

Thanks!

Hi Petey

As to drones, the best idea is the standard suggestion for anybody in your position - go to a tionol (pipers gathering) and try as many different sets of pipes as you can to see what you like in drones.

Personally I would get the bag with the drones, that gives you both options - practice and half set.

Any reason as to why you would want a different maker? :-?

I don't understand why you wouldn't get the drones from Seth. They'll match aestheticlly and most importantly they'll balance if you get let Seth fit them and make adjustments.

Seth does have a 30 month wait. Childress has 11 months for just an upgrade. Its possible to pick up a Gallaghar half set on e-bay occasionally.

You will be very sorry if you don't go for Seths drones. Easily tuned, powerful sound and they will match your chanter. I platy on a Gallagher set myself and wouldnt think of getting another set...

Apart from that you have a chance now to avoid another "Frankenset".

There's some other options you may wish to consider such as a traditional bored stock vs hollow stock. metal vs wood stock. Type of resonator on the bass drone. These are just a couple of options you could choose from as i've seen quite a number of clever ideas regarding drone design.
