Bluegrass

Post by blainemcquinn »

what's the matter with liking bluegrass? It has some of the best musicians around playing that music. Plus it's the music of a people, so it's like someone who isn't irish saying irish is bad. Bluegrass is evolved distantly from celtic music, but it is so different.

I don't think the comment was directed at bluegrass so much as attempts to mix it with traditional Irish music.

There's nothing wrong with bluegrass. I grew up in the part of the US where bluegrass originated and flourishes till this day. I didn't care for the video in that Eileen appeared to have the piper on stage just so that the audience wouldn't look at their tickets to make sure they weren't at a Bill Monroe tribute concert. :P

Thank you thank you thank you to whoever posted the clip of Mr. Laban playing Taimse Im' Chodladh. My new favorite air...and it led me to a wonderful sean-nos version done by Iarla O'Lionaird. Wonderful.

Chris certainly does justice to his regulators. Some nice off-the-knee chanter work too. It was interesting watching his hands - his right thumb hardly touched the chanter when he was playing the regs.

Are you sure it's a Williams set? The reg keys don't look like DW's work. It looks more like an Arpha set to me.

Yep you are right PJ it is an ARPHA set - my mistake, I thought it was the Armagh Pipers Williams set he was using.
