Post by John O'Gara »

Anybody out there have any pictures/plans of uilleann pipe cases done in hardwood like cherry?

Thanks

How are good are your woodworking skills?
You could use 1/4" Cherry plywood with solid 3/4" x 3/4" along the edges. With a router, you would radius the corners and cut the slots for the pieces to join. It's a lot of machining & clamping. Good glue is stronger than the wood, so you shouldn't have any problems with it coming apart... unless you check your baggage on an airline. Certainly not recomended.

Hey Tony:

Thanks for the reply. That's certainly an idea. I'm doing some research for a friend who happens to be an experienced woodworker.

I was able to find one picture on one of the C&F threads so far.

Thanks again!

John, was it this one?

That's my old wood case. Australian made, 5mm plywood, felt lined interior.

A friend of mine has a very nice case for his pipes. I finally asked him where did he get it (thinking it was custom made).

Turns out it's a cheap pipe-major's case (cost $90). He removed hinges, the clasps and the fake black leather covering. He then sanded and french-polished the case before replacing the hinges and clasps. It looks great.

Hi John,
I have a client who just finished making a case and it looks quite nice. I could put him in touch with you and I am sure he can provide you with his plans. Email me if interested and I can also show you a photo.

Cheers,

There's usually one lumber store in an area that carries the rare hardwoods in plywood. A Home Depot will have oak ply with one maple. The exotic lumber store might have a good dozen plywoods in stock.

I built a few cases over the years, this is the first one:

Made from an old mahogany table, it was quite nice, but heavy. It would hold a practise set, so when I upgraded I had to find something else. Sold it with the old practise set. Probably still in Norway.

Tony,
That's very nice work there.

Do you recall the dimensions of this case?

I've been mulling a case of similar material... probably an oak or cherry veneer plywood.
