I attended some of the piping competitions, and competed from the US in the O-18 Uilleann Pipes. Though I didn't have the chance to see the full competitions except for the O-18 pipes, I can certainly say the winners of that one earned their medals. In particular, Éanna Ó Cróinín put on a spectacular show - especially his regulator playing, which was noted by one of the judges in his comments.

I thought all the competitors did a great job. I saw Jack Devereaux, who's also a member of C&F over there - he competed in the 15-18 category on both Uilleann Pipes and Uilleann Pipes Slow Airs. Also George Gerules from St. Louis was there as well - he competed in O-18 UP and UP Slow Airs.

Letterkenny was pretty packed - though I heard it was crazier last year. The pubs were as full as they are at the WCSS in Miltown Malbay. A noteable difference was that at the Fleadh, there were lots of sessions in the street, and they had the streets downtown blocked off to traffic. They were also allowing the pubs to sell drinks in the street. It seemed a lot like an Irish version of Mardis Gras to me -- just without the beads, and with more trad music

fleadh was great craic this year. last year was the first i'd missed in my life, so was good to be back. generally found the crowds to be smaller than in towns futher south, which was a good thing. there was a huge amount of musicians about, albeit, not all playing music, but then, that's typical of the all-ireland fleadhanna.

letterkenny fleadh was probably the best organised i've ever seen, in terms of the competition venues, accomodation for tutors, judges, etc. there didn't seem to be much trouble in the town, and any fears about being so close to northern ireland were squashed.

so, it's ballina or tullamore next year. some people say its either ballina or ballina, although, a bunch of offaly people reckon tullamore's put in a great bid, so we'll see.

After many years of brainwashing by Breandán Breathnach, I was surprised to discover in the early 1990s that CCE had rediscovered the existence of the pipes. Now it appears that all the prizewinners, with one possible but uncertain exception - it looks like a transcription error - are card-carrying members. Only a matter of time before swallowtail jackets and baldy-head wigs become mandatory.

Not quite stain - you have to qualify to compete at the the All Ireland, and the Provincial fleadhs in the UK and Ireland, (not in the US however it seems). There is no requirement for you to be a CCE member to compete.
