Uilleann & other?

A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Do you play any other instrument besides the Uilleann bagpipe?

I play only the Uilleann bagpipe

I wouldn't classify what I do on the pipes as playing yet.

However, I have played both 6 & 12 string accoustic guitar for 26 years in various church choirs/folk groups. Both guitars are Alvarez Yaries.

Also sing Tenor when I do sing.

By 'play' do you mean really play an instrument - lots of tunes, consitently etc, or do you mean you can plunk out a few chords, and fumble your way through a few tunes - in the same vain as someone who claims to be able to speak 7 languages whereas in reality all they can do is spout out a few well rehearsed one-liners they picked up from their Lonely Planet Travellers' Phrasebooks while on the loo in downtown Kathmandu?

Guitar, mandolin, accoustic bass, flute, whistles, and bodhran. My wife Kathy gave me Irish goat bones (tippers?) for christmas. Not sure how to hold the darn things....

I play my face among other things. I have tried to play other instruments but its a bugger to do if you have no aptitude whatsoever and are tone deaf......hence why i play the uilleann pipes, people just smile politly but because there so unusual, they don`t know if your good or bad!! Blessed are the ignorant.

I think that some people on this forum, with lists of 10 or more instruments are being a little bit fanciful in thier thinking.............................i think i`ll pop into my local music shop tomorrow and spend 10 mins sampling thier wares......when i come out i may have another 20 instruments to add to my list.

I feel somewhat inadequate with only 3 (forgot flute) other instruments that I play compared to all you talented people. I intend on learning bodhran soon so hopefully I can make it 4 ... and perhaps the spoons... would that count? :)

Cheers,

Uilleann and other instruments

Post by Timothy W. Cole »

I play GHB made by R.G. Hardie and Uilleann pipes fullset by Eugene Lambe. A recent addition is a set of David Naill bellows blown smallpipes in key of D.

Timothy W. Cole
