Lemon wood for uilleann pipes
Anyone ever try turning lemon wood for uilleann pipes? I was given a piece about 5 feet long several years ago and finally turned a few parts. It's really white and is the closet lumber in color to ivory that I've found. Birch and maple are more amber in hue. Have made three inlet valves from it so far. Best part, negligible checking!
It's pretty dense. I expected it to sink. It is heavy but floats. Love the freckles left by the thorns. Nicest new species I had not known about that I've come across in a while.
My in initial plan was to cut a bit off, leaving a piece long enough to make a shelleigh out of. Lots of 3 and 4 inch thorns! Now that I have turned some, I may just buy a whitethorn stick instead.

I've heard castello boxwood be described as lemonwood. I've seen several castello chanters and played a half-set made from castello boxwood.

Thanks PJ. I'll have to check that out. May have to save this wood to make a chanter from.

Re: Lemon wood for uilleann pipes
Do you mean real lemon wood (citrus) or something called lemon wood? I've often wondered that myself - seeing trees around here cut down - oranges, grapefruit and lemon and noticed the wood is very fine grained, they are very slow growers. The leaves don't drop in the winter but the trees can't take a hard freeze...and they smell nice.
It's true that you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar - but a big, steaming pile works best of all.

I know lemon wood as a prime timber for bows (traditional archery).

I have a sackpipa (Swedish bagpipe) made of orange. It has beautiful grain and it feels oily though that may be something it's finished with. It was never mentioned to me whether it was treated in some way.
It would make a beautiful chanter if it's dense enough. It's works fine for the sackpipa.

Re: Lemon wood for uilleann pipes
I meant a tree that grows lemons.
Nice Pipes! Since I'm in Florida, I'll get all the lemon I can find. Someone gave me some lemons about a year ago that were as big as grapefruit. Would like to have a bit of that tree.
I didn't know that some lemons have thorns. I'm going to try and seal it with something that doesn't add any color the bright white of the wood.

Yup - I think all citrus has nasty thorns - suitable for a crucifixion.

Here are my "Orange" sackpipa.
Lovely grain. Don't know if it's treated or dense enough for Uilleann pipes
but it's a great looking wood at least.

That sackpipa in orange wood is awesome! Reminds me of Pecan. Looks like that will be another species I'll be hunting for.
One of my 7/8 inch bellows inlet valves is currently listed on eBay. You can see how white this lumber is there.

A long time since I posted here.
David Boisvert made me a 4-drone C half set from curly lemonwood many years ago.
It looked and sounded amazing.
I wonder where it is now.
