Lots to be found in the U.K., apparently. There is also the option of sourcing a manufacturer of large toy elephants, and doing some home dentistry on them.

There's this amazing-looking stuff I've been told is made in Germany. They use it on recorders and bassoons, but a number of Continental bagpipe makers use it too.

This set was made by Jon Swayne, England.

Those mounts look like they could be casein - see http://www.scrimshaw.com/wp-content/upl ... erkely.jpg
as an example of rod form.

I haven't Andy but it looks nice anyway.

Some of these can be nice to turn and some can be as brittle as glass. Froment and Thompson used to use stuff that was very hard and brittle. You'd want to wear a motor bike helmet turning the stuff.
I believe Alain made his own stuff too, for a while anyway. You can buy DIY recipes online. Mix up two polymers, add 2 dyes and mix them roughly so there's a grain of sorts and Bob's your auntie.

I have a sample of the Arvorin coming. I contacted the maker in China. He can cast 65mm or whatever dia. rod which would work for bass drone pucks and bass reg bar mounts. He will custom make that size but needs a minimum order to do so. There have been a couple of versions of this material and he is sending examples of both, but now only makes the one with the grain. If it is durable and turns well, I will order the 65mm or maybe 70mm size and make small sections of it available for pipe makers. Reports from the pool cue makers say it turns well as long as it is turned at a medium or slower speed. It can chip if turned too fast. I will report on it after I get the sample.

Tell us something.: I play traditional Irish and Scottish music.

Yeah , ive been ueeing the GPS stuff, quite different to wood to turn ,drills well, easy to finish and looks nice. Seems quite sturdy , i ðropped a piece yesterday and no chips from a hard tile floor.
Dont like the smell ss its being turned but its non toxic im assured. Patiently Raise dust and fluff and its fun to work with . Cheers

The "nice grain" swayne stuff appears to be the cellulose acetate material made in Italy. It's nice stuff, much different to work than the GPS polyester. Only available every few years, in fairly large orders. There's an order on now, PM me for details. Max thickness this time is 16 mm I'm told. Minimum order 1/2 sheet.
