3 Rowsome D chanters: Koehler VS Nakatsui VS Aebi

Post by tanash369 »

Hi there,

Anyone here who had opportunity to play these 3 Concert chanters which are based on Leo Rowsome work?
Whats the difference if you can explain? I gues they all excel or lack in some areas?
I am not interested about tuning, but more about musical charachter.
The sound samples would be perfect, but I gues I am dreaming that someone owns them all :)

THX !!!

Note that a Koehler and a K&Q are not the same beast. Though they are both superb.

Would that really be a useful test? My chanters sound very different tonally when someone else plays it vs. when I do, and in my experience won't sound the same to you in a recording as they would from the players position. Also would depend on the specific reed in each of the chanters, I have a non-Koehler reed in my Koehler chanter to increase the pressure requirements to match my drones and regs, but it has a very different sound than one of Benedict's reeds.

Ronan Browne is playing a Nakatsui concert set nowadays. I would recommend looking at his channel on YouTube for the "Ace and Deuce of Pipering" video. Makoto also has some clips and videos of various pipers playing his concert sets on his home page at nakatsuipipes.com; just scroll down and links are there.

There are also clips of Mr. Koehler playing on YouTube. :-) No luck with Aebi, but it's a start. Good luck!

But he's playing a Rowsome chanter, not one he made himself. :o

Ask K P O'Kaine, he has experience with all three and owns a relatively recent Aebi and Nakatsui. He might have sound samples of all three... But of course it will depend hugely on the individual reeds and player, as has already been noted.
