loose ferrule
What to do about a loose blowpipe ferrule? It's a tight enough fit that I can't get any hemp onto the joint, but the ferrule still slides off the stock easily. Glue? Humidifier? Wait?

Never ever use glue. Just unwrap some hemp and wrap it anew. If you want, you could use a thinner fathom of cotton (dickes Fädchen - faules Mädchen) but no synthetic material. And BTW - never ever use glue.

Waxed thread for what should not move. Unwaxed thread for what should slide.

Re: loose ferrule
If it's a tight fit that hemp/thread won't fit (as you mentioned), try shellac. Get some flakes, 'melt' it with some meths until it's syrupy and paint it on the inside of the ferrule. Place back on, allow to dry and *bingo*.
Or even beeswax (hold a blob in the ferrule, heat ferrule until wax melts, place on ferrule and twist/turn to spread the wax a little).
With these gooey substances, you aren't likely to force anything and crack the wood as you might with thread/hemp/ptfe or whatever.

Re: loose ferrule
you can put it in a vise, padded with leather and squeese it ever so gently to make it just slightly out of round and then gently tap it back on with a mallet.

Thanks, guys. I'll try the wax method first.
