Who is the piper on this recording?

A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

Who is the piper on this recording?

Post by Baen »

There is an album called "The Bagpipe in Europe: Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Galacia." I'm not sure what year it was put out, but it's only on a record, so it was from the pre-cassette tape era. Maybe 1960's sometime.

Anyhow, at the beginning are 3 Irish tunes--Jig -- Turlough Carolan -- Lark's song. All the album says about the musicians are: "Performed by various native musicians", and that the Uilleann pipes tunes were recorded in Dublin.

My question is: who is the piper on these tunes? I absolutely love the sound of the pipes, and the way the tunes are played. Just superb piping!

Any info. on who this is, and what type of pipes they are playing, would be greatly appreciated!

Finbar Furey. Play his Nonesuch records after this one. Same kind of piping.

Thanks, Kevin! I'll have to check out his other albums. I have his "Irish Pipe Music" and "The Irish Pipes of Finbar Furey", but his playing sounds a bit more frenetic on those. Or maybe those 3 tunes are so classic that they stand out.

Is any of his early playing out on CD?
