Staple for Bayley chanter

Anyone know if Chris Bayley's C chanter reeds use a rolled staple, or staples made of tubing?

A tubing staple may be fine. Try it and see if works. I am not familiar with his chanters to say anything more specific. I'd start with a 2 1/4" long tube.

2 1/4 inches is about right. You can use hobby tubing type staple, but the ID must be 3.2mm. Hobby tube cannot be reamed out, and the ideal way to get the ID correct is to use a 3.2mm drill, with the blunt end rounded off and a slope put on it. Mount the drill the wrong way round in a lathe tailstock chuck, fix the tubing with 2 1/2 inches sticking out of the headstock chuck. Use plenty of beeswax on the drill and wind it into the tube. You will see the tube expand as the drill proceeds. If you do it with the lights off you can see the brass turn red as this happens. Part off the expanded tube at a little over length and de-burr. You now have a standard Bayley flat staple ready annealed for forming the eye.

It depends upon whether the chanter is based upon Matt Keirnan or Egan. The former uses standard KS 5/32" tube and the Egan a slightly tapered staple. I spin the latter up on the lathe using a tapered mandrel from the 5/32" (1/8" ID) tube from KS tube so eye end is 1/8" ID and ID at the bottom end is 3.3mm. Staple length is 2" (52mm) Head is 26mm long from end of wrapping/staple with a width at the end of 10mm to 10.5mm . Scrape will be 22 - 23mm and slip is boat shaped so sides are tapered not square
