Looking for penny-chanter clips

Post by dow »

Still kicking the pipes idea around (can't seem to completely talk myself out of it, haha).

Does anybody have access to some good clips of the David Daye's penny-chanter with or without the drones? I'd like to get a good representation of how they sound. Of course, I'd prefer that the recording be by someone who is decent, but beggars and choosers, you know.

I've searched youtube with every key word I can think of, and only came across two clips that were definitely penny-chanters. One by some guy calling himself "Bear the tinker" and one by a guy going by "Outlaw Pipes." Anyway, I'd appreciate some more samples if anybody knows of any.

Thanks a million,
Dow

Yes I did, Davey, thanks for mentioning it. He's got three early player videos there, talking about how to get the thing to souid, how to go into the second octave, and some how-to's for tuning, reed adjjustment, etc, but nothing of how they sound being played, reather than "this is how you work the bellows an bag", "this is how you play in the second octave, etc. I'm looking for clips of someone actually playing tunes on it, so I can get an idea of how it sounds, both with itself, and with other players. Any other ideas?

I am in no way an accomplished uilleann player.

But I did get the opportunity to fiddle with a penny chanter set for a couple of months a few years ago.

My pleasure. I really enjoyed the penny chanter while I had it on loan. I've toyed with the idea of getting my own every since, but just never have made that investment.

I'm hoping to hear from some other folks who have them and have made recordings. Yours were a big help, and I appreciate your posting them for me.
