I've been using this gizmo to measure reed thickness and found it to be very useful . the plunger is spring loaded and pulled back with the switch on top, I've filed the plunger to a point to give a accurate reading .

I've used something similar, a ball mic (spherical anvil micrometer). It differs by having a spherical section on the immovable portion, but I have seen micrometers with tapered posts, usually tapered to a radiused tip rather than a point.
