Have Olwell Prattens, what next?

Hi all:

Been lurking awhile.

I’m a happy owner of an Olwell 6-keyed, Pratten-style blackwood flute, and an Olwell keyless Pratten-style blackwood flute, both in D. I’m seeing Patrick next month to get a little work done on the keyed flute and am thinking of ordering another flute. But I can’t decide what. I’m mostly a session player, not in a band, and only rarely play into mics. But it’s tempting to order something the vastly different, like a Rudall boxwood. Just for fun.

Can’t decide. Any recommendations?

Go to the next level and order a Chris Wilkes "Rudall" model, or why not go for a good Rudall Rose/Rudall Carte

You might want to consider a C or Eflat body or flute.

Old flutes are AMAZING, but not to be consigned just to irish music.

Either an F flute or a low Bb flute would add some nice variety, or as was suggested earlier a C or Eb body. Pat makes a C and Eb body that will work with your existing D Pratten head and foot.

I'd recommend an F flute, they are absolutely a pleasure to play. John Gallagher makes a fantastic one(he made mine keyed one), and so does Dave Copley(he made my keyless one). An F flute paired with bouzouki is about the most heavenly sound I can think of. They play so easily and really have a punch to them.

I'm rather envious of you - it must be very nice to be able to afford 3 Olwells!

I'd say you should get an Eb, C, or Bb (assuming Patrick makes Bb). What's the point in getting another in D?

Obviously it's only my opinion, but I wouldn't describe getting a Wilkes as going to the next level. When you're at the top, you can only go sideways

Certainly the wisest counsel here.

However, if you just can't stand it, I'd say go for a C or Bb. I've got a Burns combo with C and Bb bodies in boxwood. Lovely flute, and a dream for the slower stuff.

Julia Delaney really typed my thoughts.. Personallly i'm selling all but one (possibly two) flutes in order to become a decent player instead of a hoarder
