- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free - Location: Loren has left the building.

A fabulous flute for someone, though out of the question for me with the blackwood head joint. Hopefully someone sees the thread and makes you an offer Clark.

If that is the Grinter I sold you it is cocobolo with a blackwood head, not lancewood.

Wow, double deadly for me then!

Ah good to know. Cocobolo then. The wood is reddish, but the whole thing plays nicely.

Re: WTB: Bb Flute (Low and keyless)
How did you get on Loren?
I guess it's not likely that a flute d'amore from von Huene will be any easier to come by
I finally got one by french maker Lesoeuf. It solves the allergy problem you identified, by bringing back the traditional silver lip plate design, to prevent oral contact with the wood.
Having said that, they are quite a mouthful to play. Still getting used to it.

Re: WTB: Bb Flute (Low and keyless)
Congrats on the new flute! No luck for me alas, still looking.
VH doesn't do many flutes these days and I doubt they'd even do a low Bb as a special order.
Lip plates won't solve my problem unfortunately because even my fingers and hands react to the woods I'm allergic to
So, I'm still searching......
Have fun with your new Low Flute, they are a bit more effort, but they sound amazing

Re: WTB: Bb Flute (Low and keyless)
Hi Loren,
That's quite a challenge - you're really very sensitive to wood allergy then. I thought mine was bad....but my fingers seem intact...
It's true the low Bb sounds amazing (shame I don't...) A bit more effort seems to be a huge amount of effort for me. I find it hard blowing and moving the air before running out of air and then messing up phrasing and rhythm and everything before fainting but then I've not been playing flute for some time. Lesouef does use a lot of mopane as a favourite alternative to blackwoods ... as well as boxwood. Waiting list is around a year ....about the time you started this post ....
There are a few distinguished traverso makers in your side of the world who have experience making Pierre Naust flute d'amores, although the sound characteristics and pitch might not suit. I guess the Burns flute is something you've already reviewed? Or alternatively, how about a silver keyed low Bb? Admittedly, the keys are quite frustrating and open keys like the Eva Kingma alto flute would be a dreamy low Bb hypoallergenic equivalent..
