Re: Would you be willing...
I've just posted on the "Clips" thread to make the OP happy. He
challenged me privately in the most polite way to put myself up
for criticism by the Party, so have at it. I see that Othannan and Jem
have also been inspired so I hope this doesn't cause feedback fatigue:

Sorry. 20,500 posts? I guess you have, haven't you?
Re: Would you be willing...
I removed my comments about your playing.
Please stop.
I thought that you were seeking actionable feedback.
I am sorry.
I've been wrong before.

When I first read that I got "affectionable" feedback.
Don't be sorry.

Re: Would you be willing...
Tweedledummery jokes aside, I agree with Arbo ('s post on the Clips Sticky) that this is absolutely not about "competition" but about sharing approaches, illustrating points made, etc. I didn't make my clips to compete (is partly why I didn't post them here) but to explore and demonstrate.

I'll need to remember this type of feedback when next you share your clips for discussion.jemtheflute wrote:.........I had to stop listening a short way into the second time through - couldn't bear it, sorry,.........

Re: Would you be willing...
I deal professionally with lots of criticism. I send papers to journals and more often than not they
are rejected. It hurts. Sometimes there are comments. They hurt. It's a brutal process and lots
of people can't stand it, but it makes for better papers.
I've learned this. When I receive a rejection and comments that often demonstrate the referee hasn't
read the paper, not really, I have five minutes before I start foaming at the mouth.
In those minutes I write the journal this message: 'Thank you for considering my paper and
sending these comments. I'll learn what I can from them.'
I sometimes send people comments on papers. I expect them to ignore what doesn't help
and take what's useful, if anything. I do NOT expect them to respond, justifying their work
against my criticisms, except to say 'Thank you for taking the time to read my work
and send these comments. I'll learn what I can from them.'
This is the only way to go that avoids all kinds of confusion. Anything else (except simple silence)
is either ego or looks like ego, and can lead to complications.
The fundamental principle: when asking for comments/feedback, simply thank the folks who comment.
Do not justify your work or criticize the criticisms or the critics. If you can't do this, don't ask for comments
in the first place. Takes extraordinary self-control but I swear it's the best way to go.
How smart I am or how talented I am isn't up to me. How professional I am is.
