good tunes for 'c' flute

Post by mariajeff »

hi

i'm working on "caislan an oir" the 5th tune on the 'contentment is wealth' album by malloy and kean. works very nicely with 'c' flute, wondering what other tunes people like to play on this flute.

thanks!

You should look into a hornpipe called "The Birds".
You can hear Kevin Crawford play it on the "On Common Ground" album.

Try the Road to the Glen (reel composed by Ed Reavey), Dowd's Favourite (not Dowd's #9; that's a different tune), Maghera Mountain (composed by Martin Hayes). Those tunes are tricky to play in their original keys on the D flute, but sit well on the C flute. It's a nice way to play your C flute with others without having to ask the fiddlers to tune down.

I'm surprised no one has said this yet, but "All of them"! I guess C flute is treated a little differently than B or Bb, and different from pipes, too, I guess, but if I had one, I would just play all the tunes and enjoy how they come out lower.

By the way, Brad, it's the Lane to the Glen, not Road. At least that's what Ed Reavy named it. I find that it's one of the easier of the trickey Reavy tunes to play on the D flute, at least as long as you have a couple Fnat keys (and the low C# is fun, too). I mean, compared to Blessings of Silver anyway.

You can always play Fisherman's Lilt - the C version... I'm sure people will join without a prob.

"The girl that broke my heart" is often played in C.

I believe, anyway.

pretty much any G tune, slowed, sounds beautiful since it keys in F, which is just lovely on the guitar, too.

I would play Julia Delaney. It's my favorite tune to listen to but alas I have never played it.

agreed on Julia....takes it down to C-minor.....but you should have keys on the flute for full effect.
