That Secret Vault in Your Head

Post by crookedtune »

No one seems to want to talk about this, but you know what? This is the internet. Nobody knows me here. I'm anonymous.

So here it is: In case anyone's wondering about my head, it's as empty as the day it came into this world. In fact, I've got three, and you won't find a thing but air in a one of 'em. Such a waste. Such a shame.

Somehow, though, I doubt I'm alone. You, too, have that one or two cubic inches of space between the cap and cork. What's in there? A couple of aspirin or Alka-Selzer? A spare house key? Maybe just a scrap of paper with your name, address, and phone number? Or are you like me: totally vacant?

It's time to confess.

In mine there's a leprechaun smoking reefer, and he gets testy if he's disturbed.

Lumps and threaded bars of solid brass. And a bit of air, but not readily accessible. (Patent Head).

And there was me expecting from the title that this thread was going to be about all those tunes you know but you don't know you know and can only play when someone else starts them but then they pop out perfectly formed.... but you don't know their names and then they're gone again...... or you know you know them from the title but they won't come out to play..... or..... :swear: :poke: :tomato:

Hey, maybe the head-space IS where they're stored and that is why they don't seem to be in one's own head....... :waah:

Good thought, Jem. Maybe I'll pop in a micro sd card for my mp3 player, so I can carry recordings of the first few notes of each of the tunes I can never remember how to start!

Funny how those tunes get from flute to flute, though.... must talk to each other in my flute bag! But how do the whistles remember them?

Tell us something.: I play fiddle, concertina, flute. I live in NH. Lived in Kilshanny, Co Clare, for about 20 years. Politically on the far left. Diet on the far right (plant-based fundamentalist). Musically in the middle of the pure drop.

Steel shot and cornmeal. The steel shot is for balance, and the cornmeal is so that it doesn't sound like a shaky egg (Point of balance should be distance from Emb. to L1 - 3x bore diameter at the head). If there is not enough room for shot, tungsten powder is used instead). This lightens the load on the right hand.

I prefer to remain an airhead. I don't like the feeling of being plugged up, either.

I keep asking who's in there and all I get back is.

"My name is Legion: for we are many"

What the hell does that mean?

All know is that it gets pretty darn crowded.

If someone would only just stop taking my beer and snacks from the fridge.

I mean come on.

I could see nicking one but the whole 24 pack?

I've written my name on them and everything.

How hard can it be to just go frikn' buy your own?

I always wondered if it might be possible to place a microphone there. Basicaly one would remove the original screw stopper and replace it with a relatively thin stopper containing a hole of maybe 1mm in diameter. The end cap would then hold an omnidirectional lavalier type microphone and a cork or thread lapping, closing the flute. Might that work?

At the moment, my flute has a threaded delrin rod there. Needed for the screw cork I never use.

Unfortunately, the original screw stopper in my head came loose and fell out a long, long time ago.
