FS: tweaked Bryan Byrne flute

Post by bang »

hello all,

i am offering for sale a great Bryan Byrne "Rudall" style flute with minor modifications by Forbes Christie of Windward flutes. this is the flute Barry previously offered in this post. pictures and commentary can be found there, including discussion of the work done by Forbes Christie. fwiw, i emailed Forbes regarding the changes and he was kind enough to send me his repair notes for that work. those notes say that only the bore of the foot joint was changed.

this is an awesome flute. i have kept it humidified, and it is in excellent condition. i am asking $1000 plus shipping. inquiries by PM please.

enjoy! /dan

I think these are among the best flutes made.
I believe the byrne is one of the flutes that is truest to the old
rudalls. This one has medium holes. These are not easy
to play but if you stay with it it will make you into
a far better musician.

Here is a video of me playing mine. The sound quality of the video is beginning
to drop but I think you can still hear the extraordinary quality
of the flute's sound.

I add that the new price for one of these is 1600 dollars and a wait.

Jim,

Nice tone and playing on that clip. You're right--I can hear the potential of the flute, edge+sweetness with pop to the notes. I'll keep the BB rudall in mind for the future.

Cheers,

edge+sweetness with pop to the notes

Thanks, yes that's the story. Lovely focused sound.
And it has good volume too. Learning to play the bottom
D took a lot of time but it's a good low D. Brad
Hurley plays a keyed Byrne and gave very helpful advice.
At the moment I'm not aware of a better sounding flute
except maybe the Olwell Pratten, but that's apples oranges.
Bryan's flutes are underappreciated, IMO, perhaps because
they aren't easy to play. But these flutes are alive.

Also this is the most comfortable flute I've ever played,
hands and fingers fit very well and it's easier to relax.

Yes, it's one of the nicer flutes I've had-and Dan has it at a very reasonable price too for a Byrne. I would love to spend some more time with it again, but I just don't have the dosh.

These Byrne flutes are few and far between, and from what I've gathered Bryan doesn't make many when he is taking orders (which isn't all the time) either. So it's a good opportunity to get one now if you got the dough.

It's not a particularly easy flute to know well without putting in some time, but worth the effort, I believe. Especially if you have the energy to put into playing it with some gusto. But you can play it sweet and quiet too-though I just think it excels (and gets more interesting) when pushed a bit-at least that's how it was for me-lots of fun to play like that too. Very nice flute, and very well crafted. Good luck with it to the new caretaker-have a blast!

I talked with bryan a couple of weeks ago.
He isn't taking more orders for keyed flutes till August.
He is taking orders for unkeyed flutes. He has developed
a newish small-holed rudall-style flute about which
he is enthusiastic--says it has lovely sound
and good volume. I didn't ask for the wait time
on unkeyed but he said the wait for a keyed flute
would be 'within a year and a half.'
