A few clips of Billy Miller bamboo flutes posted on YouTube.

Post by fluteboy »

Hi folks,
Zac Leger here. I recently came into possession of a couple of lovely bamboo flutes by William Miller of Floyd County, VA and decided to post a few clips on my YouTube channel for anyone who cares to listen/see. I met Billy at the Milwaukee Irish fest last year and we quickly fell into conversation. I told him I had been wishing for an 'E' major flute to facilitate playing tunes in E and A a little more smoothly. He sent a lovely E flute as well as an F flute which is fantastic. I have been using the E on a few sets with Eileen Ivers and Immigrant Soul as well as Celtic Crossroads, and I am hoping to integrate the F on a set or two in the future. I am still getting used to the flutes and when I recorded these two sets with my friend Diarmaid, we were both feeling a bit under the weather. So, all in all, I don't feel my playing really does the instruments justice here, but since we had the time that day, we decided to take a crack at it. I can honestly say, for those of you who are depressed over the vacuum left by Patrick Olwell's decision to cease making his bamboo flutes, Billy Miller is your man. His workmanship is exquisite, the playability quite easy for bamboo flutes and their tone is mellow and warm. Also, he's a heck of a nice guy!
You can see the videos here: http://www.youtube.com/legertymusic
And Billy's site here: http://www.windwoodflutes.com

All the best,
Zac

I've got an Eb that Billy made for me years ago. Real window rattler. I would love to get an F but I checked out the link you provided to his web site and there is no contact info. How do I get ahold of him? He really does make a nice flute.

Well Denny; really I just found it interesting that he was still making flutes. I've been out of the loop for a long time now and it's good to see a person can still get a pretty good flute and not have to spend a years wages on one.
Nice to see your still around too.

Take care;

You know, I'd been thinking about an E whistle for A stuff, but ... well, duh! Why not? In fact, there happens to be an E on Doc's site right now. Thanks, Denny -- and thanks, Zac! I'm looking forward to hearing your clip. I'm sure it'll be great, as always. Keep well!

Thanks Denny; ya Doc has a couple on his site. I would rather keep Billy making flutes though. I remember selling my Olwell D, which he made for me for 78 bucks for 78 bucks here many years ago and now I'm seeing people getting like 400 for them. Mother of pearl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Cathy; good to see your still here also.

Tom!!!! Great to "see" you, too! :-)
Hey ... you still wrangling those big horses and their big old stinky feet?
I know what you mean about those flutes. From the looks of it I should have cashed out my retirement and bought more bamboo Olwells! :boggle:
Hope all's well and you're staying warm -- we've missed you!

cat.

Since Doc has Billy's flutes listed as new, I'd guess that Billy thinks that Doc is keeping him making flutes.
