I've heard of them, of course, and read [http://www.atelierdelutherie.info/?-Vents-&lang=en]her website[/url] (which is well worth a visit - beautiful instruments!), but it's not fair to tantalise like that! Tell us more.........

I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

apollogies folks! I didn't have time to ellaborate earlier.

A friend purchased a keyless ABW flute from Solen in person at the Ennis Trad Festival 2 weeks ago. It is a lovely flute, very similar to a Murray in size and appearance. There are some very interesting features, namely the flared foot joint and the slight swelling on the barrel up to the head joint which makes the main body part (2 pieces) look quite slim. It has attractive silver rings and what I believe to be a brass tuning slide, but I am happily open to correction on this. There is also an inlay of yew on the endcap - a nice touch.

It is of course a Rudall STYLED flute with an aptly shaped embouchure hole but with what I would term "medium sized" tone holes. It is very comfortable in the hands and a good firm, solid build.

The sound is bright and fluid, again like a Murray. I love the clarity of the B - A - G notes on the bottom octave and the low D is quite strong although not as loud as I would like. Tuning and intonation are spot on and overall responsiveness very good.

Solen writes on her website that people who play her flutes comment on the fact that they are "easy to fill". I would tend to agree with this.

My friend is very happy with her new addition. I would recommend these flutes to anyone in the market for a Rudall style. My friend paid 600Euro and I think that is a fair price, although I have no idea what the waiting list is like. It would be nice to try out a keyed version (her key designs are stunning), and she also makes a Bb.

There you go.
