How do you record the flute?

Post by Lee Stanford »

I'm having some trouble getting a good sound recording my flute.

My Gear: MXL usb condenser mic with a desktop mic stand

Macbook with Garageband

I don't know much about recording wind instruments. Where is the best positioning for the mic?

Any advice much appreciated!

Lee,
I use an akg c-1000 mic plugged into an M-Audio interface (fasttrack), and then into my mac and record onto garageband as well. My other system is an Edirol-R09, by Roland. My best system (which has since gone the wayside), was Pro-Tools, running on an old PowerMac 7300.

I record with a Zoom H4 from across the room - gets rid of the "hiss".

Thanks guys. That was really helpful. I think I need a new mic stand for a better angle.

Pat
I record with a Zoom H4 within a few inches of the built in mic -- without any hiss. Plunk111, may I suggest putting the mic setting on medium and keeping the digital amplification set at the factory setting. I can't remember what that is.

Michael:

Funny you should mention that! I changed my method... I tie a cord thru the mic guards on the Zoom H4 and hang it around my neck now. It works great after I lower the sensitivity.

I use "BEHRINGER C - 3" microphone and "Alto L-6 mixing console".
After recordering i usually edit that in "Аdobe audition".
I'm just a beginner... =)

Results are here:
The Sea
Walton's D - Lavin's Favorite
Bansuri F Cooley's Reel
Folk. =)
Night Sea
Bagpipe Chanter

I find that flute players I have seen live put the mics somewhere above eye level (or higer) so that the mic doesn't pick up the sound of their breathing. Also, In a small room I sometimes turn the mic away from me so it picks up the sound resonating around the room.
Flute for thought.

Not that I know. I just use my Sharp minidisc recorder with a Sony mic.
