If you have trouble finding almond oil, you might also consider using flaxseed oil. You can buy it wherever they sell health supplements(vitamins). If you buy a bottle of it, you need to keep it refrigerated after you open it. An alternative is to buy it in gel capsules. You can open the capsules one-at-a-time and don't have to refrigerate the rest.

By pharmaceutical I mean edible. Hydrocarbon based oils are generally not.
I am told by Phil Bleazey to use Almond oil on the blackwood hi-D whistle I bought from him. He says that some oils are drying type especially Danish and linseed, (both of which are used as furniture oils I think) and he does not use them. He recommends frequent oiling with almond oil and says the tone is noticeably changed after oiling, getting better and also sharper. I can tell the difference but to me it's not as great as Phil notices, but then he's probably more acute than I am.
I also have a honduras rosewood flute from Fred Rose who tells me he uses Liberon oil during finishing my flute, both inside and outside, and recommends using pharmaceutical almond oil on the bore only, not on the outside, and says keeping the cork joint greased is probably more important than oiling. This flute is feather light about half the weight of my well liked Casey Burns Folk flute, maybe even less than half.
Incidentally both the flute from Fred Rose and the whistle from Phil Bleazey are absolutely top notch instruments, I take my hat off to both of them, in fact I have just ordered a new blackwood low D whistle from Phil Bleazey at what I think must be a record hi price for low D whistles, based on the great quality of his hi D which to me sounds beautiful.
For newbies or anybody I recommend both.

Uhh, VB, isn't the correct spelling "chitterling"?
So Phil is now saying no linseed oil? When I got my boxwood flute from him, it had linseed oil on it, including on the slide, which I had to clean off with steel wool. Neither of my whistles did, although I got them earlier. I still think it's a tragedy to put something so stinky on a wood that smells so wonderful on its own. Maybe they could make a popcorn-scented bore oil just for boxwood.
PS -- my Hammy cocobolo flute also smelled of linseed when I got it, although Hammy said it was the most fragrant rosewood he'd ever turned.

- Tell us something.: I play flute, whistle and harp and have been a member on this board for many years. I have tended to be a lurker recently and just posted a response for the first time in quite awhile.
