Matt Molloy - Tears on Stone (Probably my all time favourite)
Matt Molloy - Heathery Breeze
Kevin Crawford - In good company
Seamus Egan - When Juniper Sleeps (quite un-trad)
And of course the WFO cd's if they count

what an excellent topic. as i keep mentioning, i don't know much about itm. i would very much like to hear a cd of irish flute music. specifically, one of very slow, haunting airs. other instruments and even singers would be ok too. you all mentioned the names of albums but you didn't mention what kind of music was on the albums. does anyone have any favorites? thanks.

mutepointe, one very good idea would be to look up all the cd's posted here on amazon (most of them are available, but some of the cd's mentioned might be very rare). You'll find sound samples and reviews there.

Cheers

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

I should have also listed Brian Finnegan's - When the Party's Over.

I don't own any of Molloy's solo stuff, unfortunately. And if I had any of Hammy's stuff, I lost it in one of my moves. Hmph.

The Coen brothers: 'The Branch Line'
Mike Rafferty : 'Speed 78'
Josie McDermott's album

and I'm quite partial to anything by Paul McGrattan ('Keelwest' is a good 'un).

A list of three, ha ha. :)

I like most stuff by Matt Molloy*, Harry Bradley, Mike McGoldrick, Brian Finnegan, Josie McDermott, Paddy Carty, and many others. Jean-Michel Veillon gets high marks for his mastery of the instrument (but Breton music doesn't really appeal to me the way Irish does).

(*: Black Album and Heathery Breeze in particular, I think).

A couple of recently bought albums I really like, not solo flute, though:

Seamus Quinn, Gary Hastings: Slan Le Loch Eirne
Harry Bradley, Jesse Smith, John Blake: The Tap Room Trio

And I'm listening to Conal O Grada right now! :)

He's actually got a new album that was just released last week called:

Marcas Ó Murchú - Turas Ceoil (CICD 163)

It has 17 tracks on it.

The contact details from the album slieve seem to be:

Phone: 00 353 87 232 6498 and
Email: turasceoil@hotmail.com

I'm not sure when the official album launch is though, but perhaps you could enquire at the Email address / telephone number to find out, if interested.

Very nice album too!

ImageEdit: Marcas' Email is turasceoil@hotmail not "tursa" if you can correct this please in your address book, apologiesImage

Tell us something.: Just updating my profile after 16+ years of C&F membership. Sold most of my flutes, play the ones I still own and occasionally still enjoy coming here and read about flute related subjects.

- Jean Michel Veillion - BEO (and other works :-) )
- Harry Bradley - Bad Turns and Horseshoe Bends
- Desi Wilkinson - Shady Woods

Not quite solo, but lotsa flute: Flook (especially Flatfish)
Mike McGoldrick & John McSherry - At First Light
The Tap Room Trio!

and everything I've so far heard of Hariprasad Chaurasia (since the topic doesn't mention Irish flute :-) )

1. Conal Ó Gráda, The Top Of Coom
2. Hammy Hamilton, The Moneymusk
3. Desi Wilkinson, The Three Piece Flute
In that order.
Notice that in many cases, a persons geographical location says a lot about who they choose?

The one I am listening to at the moment, with the tune of the day on it... whatever that may be.

Conal Ó Gráda - The Top Of Coom
Harry Bradley - Bad Turns...
An Gaoth Aduaidh

I need to give "Flute Players Of Roscommon" another spin otherwise it would be up there. My favorite Molloy is "Stony Steps" and my favorite JMV is a tough call but I'd have to go with "E Koad Nizan" as it is a more lightly produced recording. I am sans "BEO!" however.

Cheers,
Aaron

In no particular order...

Colm O'Donnell - Farewell to Evening Dances
Matt Molloy - Heathery Breeze
Matt Molloy/Sean Keane - Contentment is Wealth

Honorable mention goes to Music at Matt Molloy's -- although this is not strictly a flute album, my first hearing of "The Parting of Friends" is what suddenly caused me to have to have a flute. That was the first tune I learned, and it is still my favorite.

Peter Horan and Fred Finn: Music of Sligo
Peter Horan and Gerry Harrington: Fortune Favours the Merry
(and even though it's not strictly a flute album, my third choice would go to the great flute tracks from )
The Mountain Road: Tunes Popular in South Sligo
Sol's Tunes (new tune 2/2020)
