interesting recording

Post by nonagon »

I came across this item on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/20s-Irish-COL-78-Jo ... dZViewItem
(for the "link-timid": It's a 10" 78rpm recording of John Griffin Flute Solo and Songs "The Widow McGee" and "Peggy Malone").
Have any of you heard of him?
I have never heard flute solos from that era, in fact I havn't came across much from the pre-Clancey era.
I am not tempted to bid though, but it did catch my attention.

cheers

John Griffin was billed on his records as the "Fifth Ave. Busman." If I recall correctly. The recordings I've heard of him are songs punctuated with very breathy flute playing, like was the norm. Real Old Mountain Dew may be familiar to some; She Couldn't Drink Her Tea uses the melody of the Collier's Reel. Great stuff!
