Hammy Hamilton on Nationwide

Caught it by accident, earlier tonight the RTE program 'Nationwide' had a short item on Hammy Hamilton, nothing deep or complicated but a nice little item on how he became a flutemaker, a bit of talk, a bit of fluteplaying and some footage of him turning and reaming flutes (handheld, all of it).

Edited to say that every time I see the title of this thread, I hear the commercial refrain "Nationwide is on your side" and I wonder why Hammy is moonlighting as a spokesperson for insurance . . .

Nice one Peter, thanks. Very interesting to see Hammy's workshop and use of the lathe. I'd like to see some documentaries of instrument makers. There is a TV documentary with Sam Murray made by Méabh O’Hare which I nearly got hold of - some flute player was going to send a copy he had been given by Meabh but nothing turned up

There was a series of programmes on musical traditions of the North. One program dealt with the flute. I think Breandan O Hare was the flutemaker in that, lots of nice music, talk etc. Seen that a couple of times but can't recall what the name of it was. Ran for the first time some three years or so ago.

anyone know who the is the other flute player , on the duet ?
i have a 28 kbps connection , so am just picking up just single shots .
the sound is ok , but i'm just curious as to who the other player is .

I'm waiting for Hammy's part to come up...but in the mean time.

There's a show on the DIY cable channel called Handmade Music that covers the making of instruments over several episodes.

So far, I've just seen two instruments made by the same maker. It'd be interesting to see makers of traditional instruments on it.

I saw an article on that, too, Steampacket; I believe it was on one of the RTE sites or something. Alas, I never found the documentary itself either.

It wouldn't be the Irish Parlor Trio thing with Paul McGrattan, would it?

It doesn't look like Paul...he looks more like Conal O'Grada to me but I'm not sure.

Sorry; hadn't looked yet. I was just listening to the Parlor Trio stuff this morning so had Paul on my mind and was thinking it might have been from then. But being as Hammy and Conal live near each other .... that would make sense, especially if this was newer stuff.
