- Tell us something.: I restore 19th century flutes, specializing in Rudall & Rose, and early American flutes. I occasionally make new flutes. Been at it for about 15 years.

Touring flute in Europe
Hi,
I have one of my cocobolo flutes touring Europe. Berti in the Netherlands just recieved it, and will have it for 3 weeks. then it will be going to Henke to try out. Let me know if you want to give it a go.

Beautiful Flute, Jon. Almost makes me wish I was on that side of the pond, . Let me know if you decide to tour one here in the states. I'm still months away (at least) from moving up from my Tipple, but I'd like to give one of yours a shot, sometime.

John,
I think sending "touring futes" is an OK idea...not a great idea, but an OK idea.
But really, how many people will get to experience your flute?
A much better idea would be to send a "touring fluter" somebody that could take one of your flutes and play in all the public plazas and train staitions of Europe.
Sort of a six month busking tour.
I realize it would be a bit more costly, but the expopsure would be exponentially better.
Just let me know when you're ready. I can leave anytime.

This flute is REALLY amazing!
When I got it out of the box, all I could do is just sit there with stars in my eyes for its sheer beauty of the wood.
Was a bit thirsty after the trip from the States so I have given it some TLC first before starting to play yesterday afternoon.
I am so used to my dixon flute which I am currently driving to its limits, and then to get this lovely hybrid of a rudall and pratten, jon's own design.
VERY easy to play, does barely need adjusting with the rounded rectangles embouchure and a BIG sound to boot........
When you get one of'his flutes, for such a nice price, you won't regret.
It's gonna be very very hard to let go of this one when my time will be over so I am gonna playing the HECK out of it the next few weeks....
keep tootling

forgot to add......... there should be more flute makers sending out their flutes on tour, it is the next BEST thing when you cannot go near places with a lot of fluters or visit makers, to get the best impression you can get when you can play it three weeks instead of just the hour........
hope this tour will inspire more makers to do the same.
you rock, jon!!

Would be nice in theory, and for some makers just starting out it might be a way to make their flutes better known. However - many of us are just too busy to make such an instrument and send it off to points unknown, much less track its progress as well as deal with the questions and problems that inevitably arise.
I have heard that these touring flutes take quite a beating along the way.
