I had been weighing 'possibles' but initially ruled him out on age grounds. He was fourteen in 1975..

That would be right, Mr.G. His name is in the 1976 programme as winner of both flute AND whistle in the 11 - 14 age group from the previous year, ie 1975. He won the 14 - 16 flute competition in 1976, and as I recall, got a standing ovation for his performance, the only time I've ever seen that in any competition. Mind you, maybe there was a bus load up from Cork that year ?
