such amazing good fortune, i should add, couldn't have happened to a nicer and more talented person.

although that is not to say that having him offed and taking his flute hadn't run through my mind... ;) So...um, David...where exactly do you live?

and on another note. my undies feel less in a bunn today about flute waiting business. perhaps it's the bald re-acknoweldgement that this is just how long it is going to take. I in any case trust patrick fully. as so many people know, he's a great guy.

but i want me flute [instert pout, and sob here]. i know i will play it real good. treat it verwy, verwy well. will love it, oil it every day, oh, and play it a real lot. i will use all da keys. yes i will...

[head now on desk...].

somebody get me a shrink!

I think Eddie's price list is pretty current. It's close to what I paid for the keyless I bought in 2002, and it corresponds to what I've been quoted as a price for the beauty below once she's finished.
Image

Curly boxwood, 6-keyed Nicholson design. That's the body and foot, the headjoint is the one Pat sent me to try with the flute. My headjoint hasn't been made yet.

Point of interest: when I placed the order for the flute, Pat didn't take a down payment. He said he'd look for a good piece of clear boxwood, and when he found this piece, he asked if I was OK with a single middle section. I actually prefer it, so we went with it. And I loved playing it for the week I had it. And curly boxwood! It looks a lot better in person, and I bet it'll age really well . . . anyway, here's a flute in its infancy.

What's that on the tenon joints? Cork? Thread? Plumber's tape? Whatever it is, it's so....white.

Yep, that's just plain ol' teflon tape. I think it was just a stopgap measure, since the flute wasn't exactly done, and didn't have rings or anything.

I think pickies of flute fetuses are kinda cute, even if they'll never be mine when they grow up.

Well, if this thread is all we have to go by, the going price for a secondhand keyed Olwell is about $800.

Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

feadog39 wrote:i think i know who you are talking about: young, red hair, fluter/piper, found a keyed olwell at an antique shop or something in NY. You're probably talking about Isaac Alderson, amazing player from chicago who won the all-ireland a year or two ago on flute, whistle, pipes. He had Olwell himself restore/refurbish the the flute in question so if it had been stolen i imagine patrick would have flagged it.
Yes, that's the one! I was asking after him last evening as my curiosity was piqued, and his identity was confirmed. All the local flute players weep at his good fortune, but forgive him because of his fine playing. I understand that he was (if not still is) a student of Larry Nugent's, too. We're hosting him for the next tionól, I'm told. Should be good.

So, given some time to think about it now, I'm starting to believe that it would be best to wait another year or two before ordering a keyed Olwell.

I wan't aware of the different styles he offered, I though it was just his own Pratten variation. Given that I've only been playing for about 2.5 years, I don't think I quite know yet what style flute is just right for me, so it may be best to play for a while longer, try out more flutes, and become a bit more knowledgable about how I feel about different models before taking the big leap.

And keep browsing EBay...

thanks,
Eddie

Eddie?!! Hello? Anybody in there?

What are you thinking?! Just get on Patrick's the list now. You have at minimum seven years to figure out exactly what you want and become more knowledgable. The prospect of filling your oder will not even broach Patrick's consciousness for a very long time to come at which time he will a) never have had heard from you since and therefore not worry about it or b) you'll talk with him and sort out the details then. My good man, Eddie, get theeself on the list i say. Now. I would suggest simply writing him a friendly letter ("hear thee now that i want to be placed on that there list for a fat keyed flute" etc...makes it sort of formal) and follow up later with a phone call.

Yes, Isaac was one of Larry's students, but i'm pretty sure not any more. Like, i don't think Larry would have anything to teach that Isaac doesn't already know or couldn't learn on his own. That young whipper-snapper i would [HIS FLUTE] imagine is guided by his own musical lights now. And more [NOW!] power to him.
