The Center For Irish Music at the Saint Paul Conservatory of Music
The Center for Irish Music http://www.centerforirishmusic.org aims to promote traditional music and song through its various activities, which include weekly instruction, monthly group sessions, master classes with visiting and regional musicians and opportunities for student performances. Instruction is available for all ages, at all levels, in private and group settings. Financial aid is available.
The goal of the Irish music school is to encourage young people in the community to play together. All pupils with their families come together on the first Tuesday of each month for a Family Session instead of a class. Here, students play common tunes together and listen to tunes they may not know. This fosters a traditional experience and teaches not only listening skills, but also a mutual respect between musicians and instruments. Often guest master-musicians join us for demonstrations on their instruments, such as Paddy O'Brien (accordion), Daithi Sproule (guitar & voice), Laurence Nugent (flute & whistle), Martin Dowling (fiddle), Peter Yeates (guitar & voice) and Chuck & Ann Heymann (harp & accordion).
Current instructors and instruments include:
Flute & Whistle: Brian Miller, Laura MacKenzie, Kate Dowling
Uilleann Pipes: Tom Klein
Fiddle: Jode Dowling, John Winston
Voice: Daithi Sproule, Shawn McBurnie
DADGAD Guitar: Daithi Sproule, Brian Miller
Piano and Theory: Sean Egan (of MN)
Bodhran: Dave Cammack
Special Summer 2006 Masterclass Series with Daithi Sproule (voice) and Paddy O'Brien (accordion and repertoire).
