Have you heard of FUD?

Post by Caroluna »

I had never heard this acronym before. I was so pleased to discover it because it puts a name to the experience.

This morning I was beating my n00b head against the wall, trying to track down a problem with my Dreamhost account. I read this --
Troubleshooting the Infamous 500 Internal Server Error

Perhaps no other error gives webmasters more nightmares than the 500 Internal Server Error. Probably because the message is so ambiguous and the root causes so myriad that troubleshooting them is a black-art to some. Perhaps this page can alleviate some of that FUD by listing common causes for various applications available in the DreamHost hosting packages.
OK, so what is FUD?

I play several flutes, many whistles, many guitars, bouzouki, banjo, and own way too many pedals.
I could open a music store if I didn't live in the back woods of Pennsylvania.

Hi Chris! You've been a long time gone. How have you been?

Hello! I've been great, thanks!

Picked up a whistle the other day and thought about this place so popped in to see how everyone is.

Well, from the Free Dictionary, for "fud" I got this:
n.
1. The tail of a hare, coney, etc.
2. Woolen waste, for mixing with mungo and shoddy.
Like I also know what mungo is.

I think it's spelled "Fudd". Elmer Fudd

From the urban dictionary;
Fudd
Slang term for a "casual" gun owner; eg; a person who typically only owns guns for hunting or shotgun sports and does not truly believe in the true premise of the second amendment. These people also generally treat owners/users of so called "non sporting" firearms like handguns or semiautomatic rifles with unwarranted scorn or contempt.
"See sonny, all those pistols in that cabinet... all thems is good for is killin people." -Example of ignorant comment from a fudd at a local gun shop. See also: Zumbo.

Well, we tossed this around last night, and I think in the States it'll never catch on as an acceptable alternative. Too close to "fuddy-duddy" and "Elmer Fudd" for us to sound as mean and scathing as we'd want, compared with the awful word we already have and use as a workhorse character insult.
