Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty. Beauty is not love.
Love is not music. Music is the best.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I felt this loss as as a huge change in the musical world. I had no idea I felt that way...until he died. Play all of Time Out in his honor folks, and in honor of that amazing quartet of players. They changed the whole landscape of jazz and popular musics.

There was a story Brubeck told when he came to play with the orchestra I was performing with in the 1980s. He was on tour with Duke Ellington sometime in the 1950s, and Ellington walked into Brubeck's hotel room with a copy of the Time magazine issue that had Brubeck on the cover. Brubeck was embarrassed because he revered Ellington and his music, and thought that Ellington should have been the first jazz musician to make the cover of Time.
He was a real class act, and could lay back on piano like few I've ever heard.

With Ron and Sid and Meg.
Ron stole Meggie's heart away
And I got Sidney's leg.

I liked the way he would just show up locally and play a few. You know, unannounced. Loved it.

Man, what a life he must have had.

When I was a kid my mom and dad took me to see him live here in Atlanta. It was one of the last concerts the original quartet ever played because Paul Desmond died a few months later. I was probably 8 years old. I have never forgotten the experience.
