Game of Thrones

Post by pipersgrip »

Anyone else going to watch that tonight? I am a sucker for the geeky things in life.

If you don't know what Game of Thrones is, it is this: an upcoming American medieval fantasy television series created by David Benioff and Dan Weiss for HBO. The series, based on author George R. R. Martin's best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of novels, chronicles the violent dynastic struggles among noble families for control of the Iron Throne of Westeros. (I stole that from wikipedia)

I think it will be worth the watch, and I look forward to seeing it.

Looked like some major production value, based on the previews, but I don't have HBO, so I guess not. If everyone loves it I might catch it on Netflix later.

I prefer Sienkiewicz's "With Fire and Sword", "The Deluge", and "Fire in the Steppe" historical novels, but I wouldn't mind a dire wolf pup although I can't believe that old book is still around, who would have guessed.

no HBO in our home either. There is one guy they keep showing in the promos that looks an awful lot like a guy from Lord of the Rings. Am I mistaken? Please give us a review. Something tells me this is going to be mandatory geek TV, just like Star Trek: TNG. Nobody liked it but they feel obliged to watch it.

Yea, that is Faramir from LoTR. It must be good if he's in it :P  I'll give my reviews tonight. Fortunately my friend has cable, so I get to watch it. Otherwise, I don't watch much tv at all.

Let me know what you think. I don't have HBO
so I will probably have to wait for a DVD or
streaming option. I saw the trailer a while ago,
and I thought the it looked faithful except for
some casting decisions (Tyrion wan't ugly enough,
Jaime and Cercie not pretty enough). But I guess
every geeky property has to bear such complaints.

But after the fiasco that was the "Sword of Truth"
series, I'm wary of TV fantasy adaptations.

I love the books' adherence to a more realistic
view of Medieval life compared to most fantasy
novels.

It was good. It is definitely not for kids. It has a lot of nudity, gory violence, and a few sex scenes. The plot was pretty good, and it seems to be promising. It was a little confusing though, but I am sure things will make more sense in the future. I had a hard time following names. I liked it though. The scenery was awesome. The landscapes were vivid and beautiful, and the costumes were very nice and realistic.

I really wish I could've seen it. I LOVE the book series, but no HBO at home. :(

I watched the first episode, mostly because Peter Dinklage is in it, and he happens to be a favorite actor of mine. Otherwise, it's just not my genre. But, I thought it had nice production values and can see how it would get some fans on board. Personally, I'd using my discretionary TV time to catch up on the magnificent "Breaking Bad."

There sure were. Cute little pups they were.

For those that don't have HBO, I know your pain(I am glad I have a friend who has it). I think you can catch it on hulu or other tv sources like that.

Dale, Dinklage is great. I think he did an excellent acting job.

I hate to revive old threads but I had to
retract this statement. Peter Dinklage is
absolutely excellent as Tyrion.

And speaking of the nudity, the Internets
are all abuzz of late that the actress who
played Tyrion's prostitute in the pilot was
Natalie Portman's butt double. Do with that
what you will.

I have to say that Dinklage is my absolute favorite character. He is brilliant in this!

I've been enjoying the series as well. After reading the current set of books that inspired it, I am finding no difficulty following the plot, but can see where someone who hasn't might have trouble. Martin had a great time developing his characters, and the depth he put into his writing has translated well to the screen. I particularly enjoy the shades of grey he gives his villans (i.e. Jamie Lannister as an honorable traitor).

Peter Dinklage is doing a great job as Tyrion as well, though the full range of the role is still ahead of us in the story. I do hope this first miniseries is successful so we will get to see some of the balance of the story.

Fantastic production quality, great story with complex sympathetic characters, fine casting... I see this one as a miniseries of potentially equal quality to Boardwalk, Deadwood or Carnival.
