I just finished reading Finn by Jon Clinch and was blown away by how excellent it is.
Finn is the story of Huck's abusive father, known in Huckleberry Finn only as Pap. It covers the period prior to and partially into the action in the Mark Twain novel. Huck's origin is imagined (no spoiler from me), how he got hooked up with the widow Douglas, etc. The book is tragic and powerful.
Clinch's writing is beautiful and while not a copy, it's very evocative of Mark Twain. If you love Huckleberry Finn, read this book.

I am so tempted to read this book in secret and then start dropping all kinds of facts in front of my wife. She thinks she knows everything. She probably read this book already.

Read it-- you won't regret it.
Go back and re-read at least chapter 9 of Huck Finn first. Lots of little details appear in there which don't make any real sense, but Finn explains them all.

How strange. I just started a re-reading of Huck Finn on my ebook last night. It's been many years since I last read it and had forgotten how entertaining it is. I guess I'll have to look up Finn when I'm finished. I wonder if it's out in ebook format? Being able to change the font of books is a wonderful thing now that my peepers are feeling the effects of aging.....

I just had the pleasure of visiting the Clemens home in Hartford, CT, this week. Well worth a trip. Plenty of interesting architecture and anecdotes.
