Recording of Jobim song?

Post by feadogin »

Hi all, back again with an obscure question. I am confident that, as usual, you guys will provide me with an answer to the most obscure questions I can think of. :-)
I heard a beautiful song on the radio a few weeks ago but didn't hear the artist. They said the song was called "Photograph", though, written by Tom Jobim. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good recording of this song? It's absolutely beautiful; here's the lyrics:

(in English)
You and I we two alone
In this terrace by the sea
The sun is going down
And in your eyes
I see the changing colors of the sea
It's time for you to go
The day is done
And shadows stretch their arms to bring the night
The sun falls in the sea
And down below a window light we see
Just you and me
You and I we two alone
Here in this bar with dimming lights
A full and rising moon comes from the sea
And soon the bar will close for you and me
But there will always be a song
To tell a story you and I cannot dismiss
The same old simple story of desire
And suddenly that kiss, that kiss
That kiss, that kiss
That kiss

Good ol' Tom Jobum.

Hey, now, waiddaminnit. I just Googled and found that Wikipedia says that Antônio Carlos Brasileiro de Almeida Jobim is also known as Tom Jobim. I did not know that.

Just remember to pronounce it "Tone" not Tom.

Ah, that could be. It would be "Tõ", where the õ is a nasalized "o" - which would be spelled "Tom" in Portuguese and sound like "Tom" to an English speaker.

Would be weird for a DJ to use that in an intro, though.

Justine, if you like Bossa Nova, check out the original recordings by Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, João Gilberto, Luís Bonfá, even Charlie Byrd and Stan Getz.

Most people I know refer to him by his nickname, Tom Jobim. I guess it's just shorter so it's easier to say.

Thanks for the recommendations Davy, the first one is a bit over the top but the second one is ok. Maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and call the radio station to find out what recording they were playing.

Got most of those MTGuru, haven't heard Luis Bonfa though; I'll have to check him out.
