Converting MIDI to MP3 or WAV

Post by Dale »

Does anyone have a software tool which will do this? I need to convert two midi files into audio files.

It's not easy. You can send me the file if you want.
I'll PM you.

I can do it, if you like. I've got an app that I use for music creation from time to time, works in MIDI, but uses audio clips (and the like) for the instrument sounds. It's essentially software wavetable.

I do not know of any way to do this directly. A MIDI file does not contain any audio information, just directions for a MIDI instrument to play certian notes at certain times. You can have a MIDI device or your computer (e.g. wmplayer.exe) perform the MIDI file and then record it. Save the recording as an mp3 or wav audio file.

Yeah, this is what my software is like.
I use TiMidity++. It's easy to use, but
a stone biotch to setup.

With a SoundBlaster card, it's not necessary to use a soft synth like TiMIDity. Just load the sound fonts, then use the loopback to record the MIDI output to WAV in real time. I have a MidiWaves app that does this automatically.

As an example, I used this to render the harpsichord continuo accompaniment in my Telemann sonata: http://www.box.net/shared/uv4b8i9app

And here's an orchestral example: http://www.box.net/shared/fr79ldm8cp

I use Reason to accomplish this.

As for Sound Fonts, these days, fewer and fewer people have Sound Blaster cards, so Sound Fonts are relatively useless. Nobody pays attention to their sound card any more, what with everybody and their brother producing generic sound cards that get 7.1 surround, etc... It's a shame.

A while back, I wrote an experimental game that used high-quality instrument recordings to replicate an orchestral sound (regardless of sound card). I was quite pleased with the results. I wrote the music for the game, too, which I was also pleased with.

I went with DirectMusic, which had a system similar to sound fonts, but completely handled in software. I spent about a month compiling audio samples and getting the instruments set up to my satisfaction. The majority of the time was spent on the strings section... man, it is just impossible to replicate strings digitally. Even with recordings of actual string players playing the individual notes, you just cannot mimic the sound. I leaned heavily on the oboe, in part because the instrument has a beautiful sound, and partly because it's incredibly easy to make sound good digitally.

I believe Audacity will import midi, can't say I've ever done it YMMV.

Sort of. I tried it years ago when trying
to convert madrigal MIDIs. It didn't work.
That's why I had to set up TiMidity, since
my laptop does not allow loopback.

I have MIDI2WAV from midi2wav.com, it seems to work well at this.
